Coaching Objective
Skill Level: Intermediate, Skill Development: Ball handling and Control. This is an excellent drill to use as a warm up and help you develop your ball handling skills. This is an extension of our Windscreen Wipers drill where instead we use 2 balls, one in each hand, to complete a V Dribble. You are mastering this drill when you can do it at speed, look up and control the balls. We practice our ball handling because we want to challenge ourselves to be better at controlling the basketball. Killer handles will help you control the ball, advance it toward the hoop and create distance between you and your defender. Also, handles is a form of exercise which stimulates your body to release ‘feel good’ hormones, or endorphins. These natural mood lifters will keep stress at bay and improve your mindfulness.
Drill Instruction
- Start with your feet slightly wider than shoulder length and keeping low.
- Hold a ball in each hand.
- Keep your head up (don’t watch the ball).
- Bounce the balls across your body completing a V Dribble to the right and left continuously.
Coaching Message
- Keep low and keep control of the ball.
- Keep your head up looking in front (don’t ball watch).
- CHALLENGE YOURSELF: try and dribble as fast as you can while keeping control of the balls.
- CHALLENGE YOURSELF: Beat your Score! Keep count on how many dribbles you can do in 30, 45 or 60 seconds.
- Feel like you have the basketball on a string and Be Awesome!
