Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Advanced, Skill Development: Layups, Shooting, Footwork & Handles. The Spin Move is an excellent offensive move that helps you create space. It needs to be quick and explosive. The Spin Move can be used when your defender is pressing up and you want to beat the defender and get ahead of them. After the Spin Move you will have created space making you open to pass, layup or shoot. In this drill we will learn how to Spin and Layup therefore after the Spin Move we will complete our drive to the basket. To Master this Drill you should be able to Spin Move off your left or right foot, be explosive and balance yourself to score.

Drill Instruction

Starting with your pivot on your left foot

  1. Start in a triple threat position around 1 big step outside the 3 point line. In this training simulation we will assume there is a defender one big step in front of the basket. Place a cone in this position to simulate the position of the defender.
  2. Dribble towards the basket with your right hand.
  3. When you reach the spot of the defender, turn by getting low and put your left shoulder into the defender’s chest and place your left foot angled to the right between the defender’s feet (place your foot in front of the cone).
  4. At this point both your feet should be on the ground and complete a single pound dribble.
  5. While trying to maintain your balance, lean forward placing more weight on the ball of your left foot.
  6. Grip the ball tightly with both hands, protecting it by holding the ball into your body.
  7. Pivot on your left foot, pick up your right foot turning clockwise towards the basket.
  8. Land on your right foot, bring your left foot around turning to face the basket.
  9. Step onto your left foot and complete your layup. Shoot off your side which is most further away from the defender.

Coaching Message

  1. To master the spin start slowly and concentrate on getting your foot work right.
  2. Keep the ball protected on the spin, grip it tightly with both hands and cradle it into your body. We don’t want to allow our defender to snatch it from us or lose control of the ball.
  3. CHALLENGE YOURSELF: increase the speed of your Spin and try and maintain your balance.
  4. Be Explosive and Be Awesome!
