Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Advanced, Skill Development: Shooting & Footwork. The speed stop is used to catch a defender off guard to free you up to shoot or pass. The speed stop involves advancing the ball at high speed and, without warning, quickly coming to a complete stop. The moment you come to a complete stop, you must quickly make your next decision to take advantage of either freezing or losing your defender momentarily. Some defenders are really good at defending players off the dribble so as scorers we need to improvise. In this drill you will practice the speed stop by being explosive to the front of the hoop, performing a speed stop and then stepping right or left to score.

Drill Instruction

Step and Shoot on the Left Side

  1. Start in a triple threat position at the top of the key around the 3 point line.
  2. Push off hard and dribble with your left or right hand (vary your dribbling hand on each repetition) at speed towards the front of the hoop.
  3. Complete dribbling when you are 2 large steps away from the hoop. On your final step and bounce, complete a speed stop by landing on both of your feet to ensure you are controlled and balanced. Your toes should be pointing to the hoop.
  4. When you land on your two feet, step your right foot across your body (from right to left), when your right foot is grounded, push off your right leg and shoot on the left side of the backboard with your left hand.

Step and Shoot on the Right Side

  4. When you land on your two feet, step your left foot across your body (from left to right), when your left foot is grounded, push off your left leg and shoot on the right side of the backboard with your right hand.
