Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Intermediate, Skill Development: Shooting & Footwork. The speed stop is used to catch a defender off guard to free you up to shoot or pass. The speed stop involves advancing the ball at high speed and, without warning, quickly coming to a complete stop. The moment you come to a complete stop, you must quickly make your next decision to take advantage of freezing or losing your defender momentarily. Some defenders are really good at defending players off the dribble so as scorers we need to improvise. The speed stop drill will help you practice improvising by planting two feet in the key/paint and then quickly balancing to complete a jump shot.

Drill Instruction

  1. Start in a triple threat position anywhere around the 3 point line.
  2. Push off hard and dribble with speed to the basket.
  3. When you have both feet in the key/paint, after taking your last step off the dribble, complete a speed stop by landing on both of your feet to ensure you control your balance.
  4. When you land on your two feet, ensure your feet are in a position to shoot with your foot on your shooting side pointing forward to the basket and your body is also facing the basket.
  5. Lift your body up and complete a jump shot.

Coaching Messages

  1. Practice this drill by starting your attack from different positions around the basket i.e. front on or from the left or right side of the key.
  2. Be aggressive and explosive with your attack on the basket.
  3. On landing breathe out.
  4. Be Explosive! Be Awesome!
