Coaching Objective
Skill Level: Intermediate, Skill Development: Layups, Shooting, Jabs & Footwork. The drill is designed to help you develop the skill of a foot jab to help you create some space from your defender to allow you to quickly drive to the basket. Master this drill by learning to jab quickly, balance yourself and drive to the basket on your left and right sides.
Drill Instruction
Start on the right side
- Start in a triple threat position on the right side/wing of basket and facing the basket from a similar distance to the 3 point line.
- Jab with your left foot – Take a quick step and bring the step back while keeping the pivot foot grounded (right foot).
- Bounce the ball by pushing the ball with your right hand, pounding the ball hard (reach the hoop in the least bounces possible) and head towards the basket.
- Complete a strong and fast right handed layup.
- Rebound the ball and then go to the left side/wing of the basket.
Then switch to the left side
- Start in a triple threat position on the left side/wing of basket and facing the basket from a similar distance to the 3 point line.
- Jab with your right foot – Take a quick step and bring the step back while keeping the pivot foot grounded (left foot).
- Bounce the ball by pushing the ball with your left hand, pounding the ball hard (reach the hoop in the least bounces possible) and head towards the basket.
- Complete a strong and fast left handed layup.
- Continue to rotate between the left and right sides until you complete 10-15 on each side.
Coaching Messages
- Beat your opponent! Your first dribble and step after the Jab needs to be explosive.
- Eyes up and Stay low.
- Make the jab look real, put your body weight into it.
- Practice your jabs in all directions i.e. front, side, back
