Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Intermediate, Skill Development: Shooting, Catching & Footwork. The hop catch is an effective catching method as it gives you multiple offensive options. You are catching the ball in a balanced position by having both feet on the ground.  The player lands on both feet at the same time, therefore the player gets to choose their pivot foot, can get to a triple threat position quickly and can pass, dribble or shoot quickly.  In this drill we will teach you to shoot after the hop catch.  Make sure your shot follows the ROB rules, in Range, Open shot and you are Balanced.

Drill Instruction

  1. Start anywhere within shooting range facing the basket.
  2. Throw the ball up and out in front of you with some back spin so the ball bounces up or back to your direction. Avoid the ball bouncing away from you.
  3. Follow the ball and when you are about to catch the ball, complete a small hop.
  4. Prepare for the Hop Catch – when preparing to land from the hop catch, your feet need to be shoulder length apart and your foot on your shooting side is slightly forward than your opposite foot.
  5. You need to land facing the hoop with your feet also positioned pointing towards the hoop.
  6. When catching the ball on the hop catch, you need to catch the ball with both hands, your eyes and nose should be directly above the ball and your shooting elbow needs to be under the ball.
  7. Complete a jump shot.
  8. Rebound the ball and repeat the drill.

Coaching Messages

  1. Shoot from within range. When you master this drill, then try and shoot from outside of your range.
  2. Hop towards the ball after the back spin. Don’t wait for the ball to come to you.
  3. The hop catch needs a lot of repetition so keep practicing this drill.
  4. The hop only needs to be a small hop, what is important is you land on both feet, you are balanced and have control to make your next offensive move.
  5. CHALLENGE YOURSELF: Try 20-30 successful shots before ending the drill.
  6. Improve your footwork and scoring and Be Awesome!
