Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Intermediate, Skill Development: Layups, Shooting & Footwork. This drill will teach you how to change speed while driving to the basket and finish at speed. The hesitation is designed for you to go at speed, slow to read the defender actions and then quickly drive to the basket with an advantage. Master this drill by learning to hesitate on your left and right sides and finish with explosiveness.

Drill Instruction

Start with a Right Side layup:

  1. Start in Triple Threat position, right side of the basket around two big steps outside the 3 point line.
  2. Take 3 stationary pound (hard) dribbles on your right side.
  3. Push off hard and fast, dribbling on your right side and take 2/3 steps forward towards the basket.
  4. Hesitate by straightening up and planting your feet like you are about to pull up and take a jump shot. Maintain dribbling…..
  5. Then quickly push off again hard and fast and complete a right sided layup.

Then swap and complete a Left Side layup:

  1. Start in Triple Threat position, left side of the basket around two big steps outside the 3 point line.
  2. Take 3 stationary pound (hard) dribbles on your left side.
  3. Push off hard and fast, dribbling on your left side and take 2/3 steps forward towards the basket.
  4. Hesitate by straightening up and planting your feet like you are about to pull up and take a jump shot. Maintain dribbling…..
  5. Then quickly push off again hard and fast and complete a left sided layup.

Coaching Messages

  1. Make your hesitation look real, like you are about to pull up and jump shot. Look at the basket and straighten your back.
  2. When dribbling the ball, look up, keep your chin up & keep low.
  3. Push off hard and quickly…Be Awesome!
