Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Advanced, Skill Development: Layups, Footwork, Fake & Shooting. The Euro Step is an extremely effective layup move that allows the offensive player driving to the hoop evade a defender/s and finish at the hoop with a wide open layup. This is a really good move to help avoid charges & shot blockers. This move will also help you create space in offence by shifting the defence in the paint. Really lock in on the footwork of this move.

Drill Instruction

First Step Right

  1. Step out right and faking the ball out Right. In a game the fake will be towards the baseline side of the defender.
  2. Step Left, sweep the ball from right to left across your body, waist high and cradle the ball. In a game, the cradle will help you protect the ball from the defender. At this stage we are hoping the defender took a step towards where they thought you were going to pass the ball in Step 1.
  3. Finish the basket to the hoop by pushing off your left foot.

First Step Left

Coaching Messages

  1. Exaggerate the first step by selling the fake. Make it look real.
  2. Don’t rush the Euro step. Slow down and allow the defender to move out of your way before you finish at the hoop.
  3. When sweeping the ball across the body try other different variations like; sweeping low (knee height), sweeping across the body (chest height) and sweeping high (above the head).
  4. Practice, practice & practice and you will master the Euro Step…Be Awesome!
