Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Advanced, Skill Development: Handles. Help develop your ball control through repetition. Try to complete this drill as quick as you can. We practice our ball handling because we want to challenge ourselves to be better at controlling the basketball. Killer handles will help you control the ball, advance it toward the hoop and create distance between you and your defender. Also, handles are a form of exercise which stimulates your body to release ‘feel good’ hormones, or endorphins. These natural mood lifters will keep stress at bay and improve your mindfulness.

Drill Instruction

  1. Starting with the ball in your right hand and your feet just wider than shoulder length apart.
  2. Bring the ball behind you and cross from right to left behind your back.
  3. Cross the ball behind you again from left to right behind your back.
  4. Control the ball with your right hand and bring the ball to the front of you.
  5. Cross the ball between your legs from front to back.
  6. Control the ball with your left hand and cross from your left to right behind your back.
  7. Cross the ball behind you again from right to left behind your back.
  8. Control the ball with your left hand and bring the ball in front of you.
  9. Cross the ball between your legs from front to back.
  10. Control the ball with your right hand and cross from right to left behind your back and repeat steps 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10.

Coaching Messages

  1. Try and look up and don’t watch the ball.
  2. Challenge Yourself: complete the drill quickly without losing control.
  3. Practicing your handles will improve your ball control and help you keep the ball away from defenders…Be Awesome!
