Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Intermediate, Skill Development: Layups, Handles & Shooting. This drill is designed to help you develop the skill of crossing behind your back, controlling the ball and then driving to the basket. Master this drill by learning to control the ball, looking up, practicing on your left and rights sides and be explosive.

Drill Instruction

Start with a Right Side layup

  1. Start in a Triple Threat position.
  2. Take 3 pound (hard) dribbles with your left hand & on the left side of your body.
  3. Cross the ball behind your back (from left to right).
  4. Once your right hand has control, push off hard stepping your left foot across the right side of your body &
  5. Push the ball out to your right side and complete a right handed layup.

Then swap and complete a Left Side layup

  1. Start in a Triple Threat position.
  2. Take 3 pound (hard) dribbles with your right hand & on the right side of your body.
  3. Cross the ball behind your back (from right to left).
  4. Once your left hand has control, push off hard stepping your right foot across the left side of your body &
  5. Push the ball out to your left side and complete a left handed layup.

Coaching Messages

  1. This might be hard at first so start the drill slowly. Concentrate on where your hands are to ensure you maintain control of the ball on the cross behind your back.
  2. Look up – keep your chin up, back straight & keep low.
  3. Push off hard and quickly…Be Awesome!
