Coaching Objective
Skill Level: Beginner, Skill Development: Ball Handling and Control. This is an excellent drill to use in a warm up and help you develop your ball handling skills. It will also teach you to pound the ball while keeping control. Those who master this drill, try using two balls.
Drill Instructions
- Start by standing with your feet shoulder width apart.
- Dribble 25 times with your left hand following these instructions:
a) Your first 5 dribbles keep the ball low next to your left foot.
b) Your next 5 dribbles are a pound (hard) dribble and bring the ball higher to your left hip.
c) Your next 5 dribbles are a pound (hard) dribble and bring the dribble higher to your left ear.
d) Your next 5 dribbles are a pound (hard) dribble and bring the ball lower down to your left hip.
e) The final 5 dribbles bring the ball low next to your left foot again. - Now repeat this using your right hand on your right side.
Coaching Messages
- Control the dribble and concentrate.
- The Pound Dribble should be a hard as you can.
- Stay low to help maintain balance.
- CHALLENGE YOURSELF: Vary the speed of the dribble from fast to slow.
- CHALLENGE YOURSELF: Complete the drill standing on one leg.
- CHALLENGE YOURSELF: Use 2 balls.
