Coaching Objective

Skill Level: Intermediate, Skill Development: Layups, Shooting & Footwork. Develop and master your shooting and footwork in the Rip & Jump Shot. This drill will help you confuse your defender, shifting them, wrong footing them and helping create space so you can quickly be free and put up a jump shot. Keeping the ball low on the rip also helps you protect the ball from the defender.

Drill Instruction

Rip to the Right Side

  1. Start in a triple threat position facing the basket from a similar of the 3 point line
  2. Rip the ball from left to right keeping the ball very low and step your left leg across your body out wide to your right keeping your right foot grounded
  3. Pound bounce the ball with a push of the ball with your right hand. Pound dribble once. Push hard!
  4. Speed Stop, Pull Up and take a Jump Shot.

Rip to the Left Side

  1. Start in a triple threat position facing the basket from a similar distance of the 3 point line
  2. Rip the ball from right to left keeping the ball very low and step your right leg across your body out wide to your left keeping your left foot grounded
  3. Pound bounce the ball with a push of the ball with your left hand. Pound dribble once. Push hard!
  4. Speed Stop, Pull Up and take a Jump Shot.

Coaching Messages

  1. On Rip:
    a) When ripping from left to right, step the left leg out long and wide
    b) When ripping from right to left, step the right leg out long and wide
    c) Stay low, bring your shoulder down to a defenders hip height
  2. Move towards the basket quickly. On the first step, push off fast.
  3. Rip Hard! Rip Fast! Be Awesome!
