Coaching Objective
Skill Level: Intermediate, Skill Development: Shooting & Footwork. This is an excellent drill to help improve your agility in offence. You will learn good foot work technique in offence which will help you change direction quickly and help create separation from your defender.
Drill Instruction
Start from the Left Side of the Hoop
- Starting on the left side of the basket, position yourself 2 big steps away from the hoop facing the basket.
- With two hands, throw the ball out in front of you with a back spin so on the bounce of the ball it will sit up and return to you.
- When the ball reaches its highest point, catch the ball, step your feet out wide more than shoulder length apart and position your body to face the direction you will move which will be to your right side out wide (45 degree angle from the hoop). Your right knee will be pointing in the direction you are about to go.
- Take a single bounce with your right hand and push off your right foot, then take a big step with your left leg and your left foot will be planted and become your pivot foot.
- Use your momentum to Jab your right leg our wide in the same direction you are moving.
- On Jab out to the right, rip the ball from your right side high over your head to your left and pivot yourself to have the front of your body facing the basket. Prepare to step off your right foot towards the hoop.
- Keeping your left foot grounded (your pivot foot), take a big step with your right foot to the left side of the hoop, jumping off your right foot and shoot with your left hand on the left side of the basket.
Start from the Right Side of the Hoop
- Starting on the right side of the basket, position yourself 2 big steps away from the hoop facing the basket.
- With two hands, throw the ball out in front of you with a back spin so on the bounce of the ball it will sit up and return to you.
- When the ball reaches its highest point, catch the ball, step your feet out wide more than shoulder length apart and position your body to face the direction you will move which will be to your left side out wide (45 degree angle from the hoop). Coaching Messages
- Start this drill slowly and concentrate on getting your footwork right.
- Make your jab look real so it can fake the opposition.
- Rip hard and fast over your head. Try also ripping the ball across your waist or even below your knees. In a game, the rip will vary depending on where your opponent is. Rip low for a taller opponent, rip high for a smaller opponent.
